Why Have AGT Trains Become Regular Winners of the "Good Design Award"? — Design Evolution Beyond a Mere "Means of Transportation"

When hearing the term Automated

Guideway Transit (AGT), many people

may have previously imagined

"inorganic moving machines" that

prioritized efficiency and functionality

above all else. Today, however, AGT

trains have become regular winners of

the Good Design Award, earning high

praise as assets that bring new value

to urban landscapes and citizens' daily

lives. Why have AGT systems come to

be recognized so widely for their

design excellence?

A major turning point in this trend was

the Yurikamome 7300 series, which

received the "Design for the Future

Award" (a Good Design Special

Award) in 2014. This award broadly

demonstrated AGT's potential as

"transit infrastructure that lays the

groundwork for future society,"

strongly influencing subsequent

second-generation vehicles.

For example, the New Shuttle 2020

series, which won the award in 2016,

succeeded in maximizing interior

passenger space within a limited car

size by designing a hexagonal body

cross-section.

In addition, the first-generation Astram

Line 6000 series, which opened in

1994, was recognized not only for

individual train design but also for its

"integrated design of trains, stations,

and tracks," winning the Good Design

Gold Award in 1995.

Furthermore, the second-generation

Astram Line 7000 series was also

awarded for enhancing accessibility

features while preserving the iconic

"bright yellow" (yamabuki) symbol

color of the first generation. This

demonstrates in design terms an

attitude of continuing to evolve across

generations while protecting

infrastructure identity.

In recent years, the evaluation criteria

for the Good Design Award have

expanded beyond aesthetically

pleasing shapes to encompass user

convenience, accessibility, and

sustainable concepts. The

replacement of aging fleets with

superior vehicles across various AGT

lines is not merely a cosmetic refresh.

It is an expression of the essential role

transit infrastructure plays in preparing

urban spaces where diverse people

can travel comfortably and safely.
