Why Is the "New Shuttle" Free from Extreme Crowding in Specific Cars? — The Power of Distributed Staircase Locations at Stations

On many transit lines, it is common to

see extreme crowding in cars closest to

the station platform stairs, while other

cars remain relatively empty. However,

on the "New Shuttle," which connects

Omiya and Uchijuku in Saitama, such

imbalances in passenger distribution

across cars rarely occur. Why is it that

passengers can enjoy a relatively

uniform level of comfort, regardless of

which car they board?


The secret lies in the physical

arrangement of the staircases that

directly connect each station's platform

to the ground-level ticket gates. Most

New Shuttle stations do not have

intermediate concourses; instead,

stairs at the end of the platform lead

directly to the ground level.














A close look at each station reveals a

clever distribution: five stations have

stairs on the Omiya side (including the

upward escalator at Tetsudo

-Hakubutsukan Station), while seven

stations have them on the Uchijuku

side. This layout naturally encourages

passengers to distribute themselves

across the entire platform at their

boarding stations, leading to an even

passenger distribution across all six

cars of the train.


This effect is further enhanced by the

structure of Omiya Station, the starting

terminal. At many terminal stations, the

ticket gates are located at the very end

of the platform, causing heavy

congestion in the front cars. At Omiya

Station, however, five ticket gates are

aligned parallel to the platform,

seamlessly connected by a wide

staircase of just eight steps.















Because the walking distance and time

to the ticket gates are virtually equal no

matter which car passengers deboard

from, this spatial structure eliminates the

very reason for passengers to crowd

into specific cars.


When passenger volume is balanced

across cars from the start, transit

operators face less pressure to

implement uneconomical train additions

or major capital investments just to

relieve localized congestion in a few

specific cars. An indispensable

perspective in urban transit planning is

not merely about introducing the latest

technology. Rather, it lies in a design

philosophy that anticipates and guides

natural passenger psychology through

details such as staircase orientation,

elevation changes, and ticket gate

placement. Simple, efficient hardware

generates an equally smooth and

comfortable flow for both passengers

and operators. Surely, this is the

direction that future urban infrastructure

should strive to take.
